Electrical Woe’s From Back-In-The-Day – November 23rd, 2010

As a child, I remember that there was an ultimate struggle in our house hold with my sister & my mother. When we would get ready to go out as a family and my sister would be in her bathroom blow drying her hair & my mom would be in her bathroom blow drying her hair and POOF….both dryers aren’t working, lights are out in both bathrooms and the girls are yelling at each other. Has this ever happened to you?

If you can relate, you know that you (or in my case, my sister & mother) just overloaded a circuit and tripped a breaker or blew a fuse. Luckily, we knew how to fix the problem, but for those who don’t know where to start, here are some pointers:

- Check the electrical panel or fuse box – see if the breaker has tripped or a fuse has blown.

- If the breaker has tripped it is easy to reset by turning it back on with the flip of a switch on your breaker panel.

- If a fuse has blown, it must be replaced. Fuses come in different sizes & styles.

If your situation is worst case scenario, then we recommend that you call a professional electrician to help you. For tips & hints on how to choose the right Electrical Contractor in Orlando, visit this previous blog post.

Do I Need a GFI? – November 17th, 2010

Do I need a GFI?

If your electrical area has high exposure to moisture, it would be best to have a GFI installed to ensure safety for you and your family. GFI stands for “Ground Fault Interrupter” and prevents two-thirds of the electrocutions occurring around homes each year. By daily protecting people of severe electric shock and preventing electrical household fires, the GFI is deemed a very important household safety device.

How does the GFI work?

The GFI works by constantly monitoring the flow of electricity within the currents to sense any loss of current. If there is any abnormal flow of electricity, then the power is quickly switched off.

Where would I have a GFI installed?

Generally GFI’s are installed in outdoor areas like patios and back porches because of moisture from the air, but they could be installed anywhere you may see fit.

Can I install the GFI myself?

When doing any electrical work, it is  unsafe to do self installation. The risk is not worth the money you would save by not hiring a professional.

Call All Phases Electrical Contracting, Inc. for questions about GFI’s or any of your Orlando electical needs and we’d be happy to help you. 407-275-9226.

Massive Solar Project Under Way – November 10th, 2010

“One of the country’s largest pretzel-makers will soon have the state’s biggest solar field.

And company officials say they’re excited about what the project means for Hanover.

Snyder’s of Hanover recently began construction of a field of solar panels which, according to both Snyder’s officials and the contractor installing the panels, will be the largest such site for alternative energy production in Pennsylvania once it’s completed.

Snyder’s spokeswoman Andrea Bartman said workers began construction on the new solar field — complete with more than 15,000 solar panels spread over 26-plus acres — about two weeks ago, with ground-clearing and hardware alignment. Installation of the solar panels will now follow, she said, with the project expected to extend into next spring.

The solar field should be complete by April 2011, she said, with the new energy source slated to go online at that time.

“We’re always looking for ways to be a more responsible corporation and to bolster our citizens and the community,” she said. “We’ve taken other steps to help reduce our effect on the environment, and something like this just kind of made sense.”

Beginning later this week, Snyder’s will install and activate a camera on top of its headquarters in Penn Township that will capture in 15-minute intervals the progress of the construction and be available online, Bartman said. Once the project is complete, those pictures will be compiled into a time-lapse video for everyone to see, she said.” READ MORE…

Should You Be Your Own Electrician? – November 5th, 2010

We all like to think we are experts at almost anything. All you have to do is just look up “how to’s” on Google and read the helpful blog by Joe from New York City. I’m guilty of this. With electrical work, however, there is not much you should do on your own. Dealing with electricity is dangerous if not done properly. Electricians go through a long training process and for good reason.

By trying to do electrical work on your own, you are embarking on major safety hazards and only putting yourself in danger.

Call All Phases Electrical Contracting, Inc. for any questions about your electical needs and we’d be happy to help you. 407-275-9226.

Guidelines For Providing Surge Protection at Commercial, Institutional, and Industrial Facilities – October 25th, 2010

Guidelines For Providing Surge Protection at Commercial, Institutional, and Industrial Facilities

By Matthew T. Glennon, P.E.
AVP, Hartford Steam Boiler Electrical Loss Control

October 25, 2010

Introduction

Damage from electrical transients, or surges, is one of the leading causes of electrical equipment failure. An electrical transient is a short duration, high-energy impulse that is imparted on the normal electrical power system whenever there is a sudden change in the electrical circuit. They can originate from a variety of sources, both internal and external to a facility.

Not Just Lightning

The most obvious source is from lightning, but surges can also come from normal utility switching operations, or unintentional grounding of electrical conductors (such as when an overhead power line falls to the ground). Surges may even come from within a building or facility from such things as fax machines, copiers, air conditioners, elevators, motors/pumps, or arc welders, to name a few. In each case, the normal electric circuit is suddenly exposed to a large dose of energy that can adversely affect the equipment being supplied power.

The following is a guideline on how to protect electrical equipment from the devastating effects of high-energy surges. Surge protection that is properly sized and installed is highly successful in preventing equipment damage, especially for sensitive electronic equipment found in most equipment today… READ MORE.

Change a Light Bulb and Save Energy! – October 15th, 2010

If you had the opportunity to save money and energy by just changing a light bulb, would you do it? Well here is your chance. That’s right – just by switching from your regular incandescent light bulb to a fluorescent light bulb, you can change the world! According to the Union of Concerned Scientists, just ONE incandescent light bulb from every US household emmits 90 billion pounds of greenhouse gas from power plants. They say that this amount is equal to 7.5 million cars on the roads. Also, with the one bulb from each home, Americans could save enough energy for 2.5 million more homes to be lit.

If those numbers don’t persuade you to switch to more energy efficient light bulbs, these may… if you switch just one light bulb in your home, you could save up to $30 in energy costs! Compact fluorescent use more than 60% less energy than incandescent allowing for a lifespan of 10 times longer!

So save money while saving energy!

Bathroom Remodeling – October 8th, 2010

If you’re like me, you’ve lived in your home for quite some time and are ready for some updates. One place to start is in the bathroom. Back in the 1980’s, a lot of Central Florida homes were built and spacious bathrooms were not as popular as they are now. As time has passed, society’s needs have changed and more luxurious bathrooms are more common. So you decide your bathroom is your first change, but where do you begin?

The first step in remodeling your bathroom is deciding what you need to buy in order to have the final look you intend. For instance, pick out colors, light fixtures, hardware, etc. After the decisions are made, begin the process! Take out all your existing hardware and decor and begin to paint.

Once the paint has dried, it is time to work on the electrical fixtures. Something to always take into account while dealing with electricity is that the electrical needs require extra safety precautions and should probably be done by a professional. All Phases Electrical Contracting specializes in many residential services including home remodeling and would be glad to assist in this step of the remodeling process.

After the fixtures are all up and running, place in that new hardware and implement those final touches to your newly remodeled bathroom!

Change the World – Join the Movement – September 23rd, 2010

Energy Star has started a movement to save energy and fight climate change. This national campaign encourages Americans to take steps towards a reduction of greenhouse gas emissions that lead to climate change.

Energy Star has suggestions on how to save energy at work, home, and in your community. This is very important and a movement that All Phases really cares about.

At home, is where it all starts. Did you know that, according to Energy Star, the average home contributes two times the amount of greenhouse gases to the environment of a car?

At work, unplug your electronics when leaving for the evening. There is no sense in wasting unused energy.

In your community, there are many opportunities to join programs that fight for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.

To join the fight against climate change, visit the Energy Star website. For more information about All Phases Electrical Contracting,  call 407-275-9226.
